Adina Pintilie: You Are Another Me—A Cathedral of the Body
Romanian Participation at La Biennale di Venezia 2022: “You Are Another Me—A Cathedral of the Body”
The project “You Are Another Me—A Cathedral of the Body”, by artist and filmmaker Adina Pintilie, has been selected to represent Romania at the 59th International Art Exhibition – La Biennale di Venezia. Curated by Cosmin Costinaș and Viktor Neumann and implemented together with a team assembled across Europe, it marks the latest stage of Pintilie’s multi-platform research on the politics and poetics of intimacy and the body, initiated with her feature film “Touch Me Not”, winner of the Golden Bear at the Berlin International Film Festival 2018.
The project is composed of a multi-channel video installation, hosted by the Romanian Pavilion, and a virtual reality extension at the New Gallery of the Romanian Institute for Culture and Humanistic Research in Venice. “You Are Another Me” explores, in the grammar of an art installation, how we relate to each other and to our own bodies.
Emerging from Adina Pintilie’s personal experiences, background, and research, and nurtured by her long-term collaboration with the protagonists, the artist’s idiosyncratic methodology explores the central role of intimacy in the everyday, centring on embodied practices and deep psychological investigations inspired by Family Constellations, attachment theory, psychosomatics, trauma therapy, and bodywork practices. It proposes possibilities to see, to think, and to relate, that destabilise ingrained visual rhetoric and politics of the gaze, making way for new forms of knowing and transformative experiences.
The public can visit the two exhibition venues between April 23 and November 27, 2022.
