The history of translation is a transnational phenomenon that needs to be examined beyond language boundaries, although the translation process as such takes place between two languages and has been conceived in national terms for more than one hundred years.

As part of this transnational system of translational activity, Rumänische Übersetzungsgeschichte (Romanian History of Translation) offers both generalisable and rather specific perspectives: the intensive translation work in the 19th century and the controversial debate on translation with regard to the nation building process, its professionalisation, how translation was dealt with during the communist period, the field of translation with regard to power and capital and how the Romanian elite’s particular interest in French culture is reflected in translation – these are only few examples of the findings that emerge from this book’s stories of processes, products and actors related to translation into or from Romanian.
