Where is Austria heading after the election?
Debating Europe

Debating Europe

The National Council elections herald a turning point in Austria’s political landscape. The starting position alone has been confusing since the EU elections in June. The ÖVP, FPÖ and SPÖ were almost evenly matched – with an advantage for the Freedom Party. How would a blue election victory affect Austria, how would it affect Austria’s role in the European context, what majorities are possible and feasible? How does the country’s cultural scene view the eruptive political shifts? What ways out of a possible ungovernability could there be and how can ideological divides be overcome?
