Gender studies have been a focal point of ERSTE Foundation’s work since 2007. We initiate und support research and cultural projects focusing in a comparative, trans-national perspective on the developments of gender relations and gender identities, of the social constructions of femininity and masculinity, and of the position of women in Central and South Eastern Europe in the past 40 years, with 1989 as reference point. Aspects of cultural distinctions as well as reciprocal influences with the immediate neighbourhood are also included. Feminist discourses, LGBT activism, and the treatment of sexual minorities are often issues in these debates.
