The discussion around the rising part-time employment rate in Austria is more relevant than ever. But what’s really behind it? The new study »Labour market effects of care needs within the family« sheds light on a frequently overlooked aspect: family caregiving responsibilities. Ahead of the day of action for caregiving relatives, Monika Köppl-Turyna will present the study during a community call.

The impact of family caregiving extends well beyond the private sphere—it’s a structural factor shaping the labor market. Women, in particular, often reduce their working hours, transition to part-time roles, or exit the workforce early to care for relatives. These decisions have extensive consequences for the overall availability of labor in the economy.

As part of the upcoming Community Call, Monika Köppl-Turyna will present the latest study from EcoAustria, developed in cooperation with ERSTE Stiftung. For the first time, this research provides robust empirical data on how family caregiving responsibilities influence part-time employment, phased retirement, and early exits from the workforce.

The study estimates an annual reduction potential of approximately 9,200 full-time equivalents—a significant impact in light of Austria’s ongoing shortage of skilled labor.

Key topics to be addressed:

  • The influence of caregiving responsibilities on part-time work and early retirement
  • Gender-specific patterns and challenges
  • Data, facts, and actionable recommendations for policymakers and society
  • Insights from new datasets and analyses on a socially relevant issue

This event is open to anyone engaged with questions around labor markets, caregiving, and work-life balance—whether professionally, politically, or personally.
