The Austrian victims of the Shoa in Belarus

Nowhere else were so many Austrian victims of the Shoa murdered by National Socialists as in Maly Trostinec, Belarus. Yet, this spot near Minsk is barely known in Austria and has not yet been anchored as a place of annihilation in Austria’s collective memory.

The organization IM-MER (founded by Waltraud Barton in 2010) has made it its task to preserve the memory of the Austrians deported to Minsk and Maly Trostinec during the Second World War and therefore organized a conference on the 70th anniversary of the beginning of the mass deportations from Vienna to Belarus on 28 November 1941. From 28 to 29 November 2011 the conference Maly Trostinec erinnern (Remembering Maly Trostinec) took place at Wien Museum in Vienna. Besides the narratives of three Belarussian survivors of the ghetto in Minsk, the book collects the most important academic conference papers, which directly deal with deported Austrians in the years 1941 and 1942 in Vienna and Belarus, and inquires about their perpetrators. The publication includes contributions by Alfred Gottwaldt, Kuzma Kosak, Claudia Kuretsidis-Haider, Bertrand Perz, Dieter Pohl, Babette Qunikert, Petra Rentrop and Sybille Steinbacher.
