Der Prager Frühling – das Ende einer Illusion?

The “Prague Spring” 1968 and its violent suppression through Warsaw Pact military in August 1968 are one of the key events not only of Czech and Slovak history, they are a landmark of pan-European history of the second half of the 20th century.

The international conference at the Diplomatic Academy in Vienna in March 2008, which was held exactly 40 years after the Prague Spring had started to unfold its dynamics, responded to the high interest that was paid to these events worldwide. Scholars, witnesses and participants of the events gathered at the conference to reflect on the Czechoslovak experiment and the consequenses of its failure. This publication tries to explore the major aspects of the reform and democratisation processes under way at the time.
