‘Feminisme’ reflects on the questions and contexts of diverse feminist practices in the broader frame of discussion about what is relevant and what is visible in the public sphere. It includes public events in the Project Space in Timisoara, public campaigns, and the gathering of research in the forms of a publication and a website.
The Project is initiated and coordinated by h.art, a group that was founded by three women artists (Maria Crista, Anca Gyemant, and Rodica Tache)
In Romania, 2001, h.arta projects took on different formats — project spaces, publications, videos, actions, and they refer to topics ranging from knowledge production and (re)writing histories to gender issues in times of global capitalism, all these in the context of working in various collaborations with people and groups from various backgrounds. At the present moment, there is a necessity to make public and shape feminist positions in a context where every aspect of daily life is saturated by stereotypical images of women; where there is a gap between the existing structures and laws and the everyday discriminatory attitudes and gestures; where there is a fear of feminism present at all levels starting with the ’normal‘ people and ending up with some of the great intellectuals. Taking into consideration all of these issues, it is important to encourage the discussion about alternatives. There is a need to make a change in the way feminism and women movements are regarded in Romania. This can be achieved through research taking the form of a publication and a website, through public campains in the mass-media, and public events in schools and on the streets.
Feminisms and their purposes should be defined in more mobile, nuance, and flexible ways. The topics approached by the project are closely related to everyday life, to everyday behaviour and attitudes. The idea is to make the mechanisms of discrimination in everyday life visible and to raise the awareness of women about the importance of giving voice to their experiences and of getting involved in actions and organisations that have the purpose of giving more visibility to women related issues.
