Kick-off Meeting, May 2016, Vienna

The Kick-off meeting for the new PATTERNS Lectures Call 2016/2017 took place from 23-25 May 2016 in Vienna, where the lecturers had the opportunity to meet and present their new and innovative university courses in the fields of artistic research, art history, cultural theory and cultural studies in Central and South-eastern Europe.

The event was organised by ERSTE Foundation and World University Service Austria and started on 23 May with a joint dinner. May 24 began with an opportunity for the lecturers and the PATTERNS Lectures advisors to get to know each other better by working in small groups, after which the advisors, Boris Buden, Elke Krasny, Ilona Nemeth and Hedvig Turai, presented their group in a panel setting. The panel sessions allowed for a short presentation of each of the courses and discussions on a wide range of topics.

The last day of the event provided the lecturers with the chance to individually discuss with the advisors and with the PATTERNS Lectures team the particular challenges in course implementation and administration.

The fourth edition of PATTERNS Lectures for 2016/2017 focuses on new artistic and activist practices, new social movements and their significance for the recent cultural history in Central and South Eastern Europe (CEE). The programme aims to research, analyse and understand different aspects of cultural practices related to the transformation of society, life, art and culture in CEE, while accounting for the pluralities that characterise the region.

The programme stresses critical methodology as well as innovative and interactive teaching practices. It encourages international academic exchange by enabling lecturers to go on study visits and offer guest lectures by international colleagues.

Out of 49 applications from 11 countries the PATTERNS Lectures Advisors selected 12 courses for the fourth edition of the programme that will be taught in 8 different countries throughout the academic year 2016/2017, including courses coming Austria (1), Bosnia and Herzegovina (1), Croatia (1), Hungary (1), Poland (3), Romania (2), Serbia (1), Slovakia (1).
