Regional Programme 2015/2016

The Regional Programme 2015/2016 offers 32 workshops covering a huge variety of important management-related topics. Part I puts a thematic focus on leadership, a topic that is crucial for organisational development, especially in times of high volatility. The second part’s core area is communication, ranging from journalistic writing to proposal writing, from building CSR partnerships to social marketing and social media. For the first time, the Regional Programme also offers customized workshops for organisations operating in the cultural field.

Leadership in Civil Society

The capability for successful leadership is not something you are "born" with. Leadership can be learned and acquired. Professionalization of management must not be limited to technical/instrumental professionalization through increasingly applying management concepts and instruments. Above all, it also means professionalization of leadership, be it establishing appropriate structural arrangements or interpersonal leadership and improving it through training and learning. Starting with leading oneself in situations high demands, leadership means dealing with authority, conflicts and decisions. Also, leadership means leading in and with teams; the leader as "lone wolf" or "great person"-theories are outdated. Leaders will continuously have to prove themselves within teams and to be prepared for the dynamics of such teams.

The training consists of four major modules:

  1. success factors for leadership,
  2. 2 Pros/cons of teamwork, team dynamics),
  3. shortcomings of decision making,
  4. conflict management.

Meanwhile, leadership behaviour and its impact on organizational success have a prominent position within theoretical and empirical management research. Nonetheless, there is not only a considerable knowing-doing-gap, but also a deep gap between academic logic and common sense. Both of these gaps should be bridged.

In the middle term the desired goals, the service program and the available (financial) resources must be optimally adapted to each other. This entails repeatedly performing the task of evaluating the meaningfulness of investments and estimating their consequences.

The workshop focuses on relationships, emotions and communication - the areas which leaders are supposed to head. It will familiarize participants with the ways of leading managerial interviews and train its preparation and leading in real examples. The participants will find out if they are able to lead evaluation interviews and they will receive feedback from other participants and the trainer based on recorded video. They will be trained in the ways of dealing with critical situations and will realize that emotions, emotional abilities and other factors are really important during team communication. They will develop their abilities in the field of conflict solving thanks to video-training containing real situations and problems they might head. Social innovation for civil society: innovative approaches to civil society engagement

More and more civil society organizations face challenges that are pushing them to seek creative and innovative approaches to work, management and financing. The aim of the workshop is to inform, present and through interactive discussions and work educate representatives of civil society organizations from SEE countries about these new challenges and approaches in management and work in general. Additionally the workshop will develop their capacity for definition, preparation and implementation of innovative methods and practices.

Topics covered include: innovation in leadership, effective cooperation with other sectors, the social process of innovation within the project planning, definition of new sources of financing, integration of research and research methods in the process of project and business planning and other similar topics. In order to encourage innovation in civil society, sector leaders are increasingly turning to new methods such as the process of social innovation or "Design Thinking". How to successfully manage an EU funded project?

Effective project management and having the capacity to appropriately manage EU grant contracts is a very important set of skills that CSOs need to have. Very often, CSOs recruit staff on a project-by-project basis and therefore they frequently do not have sufficient institutional know how to manage EU funded projects according to EU procedures and following internationally-recognized good practices.

Managing the EU funded project and reporting on the use of EU funds and ensuring compliance to EU procedures is all part of good project management. However, many CSOs lack the capacity to provide the quality of project management and reporting that the EU expects, and consequently many CSOs find the burden too heavy to bear. But, by following sound and simple project management advice, the experience of having to report on EU funds can significantly strengthen a CSO’s long term capacity for transparency and accountability. The aim of this workshop is to provide participants with the skills to enable them to effectively manage an EU funded project.

Marketing Management in Nonprofit Organisations

The main elements of marketing management issues are imparted to establish a homogeneous and current knowledge base among participants. In doing so, the participants´ practical expertise and previous knowledge will be picked up. Marketing is seen as a way of thinking, a kind of a mindset and a management duty in markets. Starting with marketing targets, strategic and functional marketing issues are discussed. Psychological and sociological approaches to explain the behavior of marketing addressees (target groups - clients, patients, relatives, "customers", and employees as well as volunteers), aims of market segmentation and the impact of marketing instruments are core topics. The communication policy is thereby seen as an essential instrument which has to be designed for establishing and maintaining long-term relationships with stakeholders. Marketing decisions needs an up-to-date and target-relevant information basis which can be developed with market research. The main elements of a market research design (purpose, methods, sampling, etc.) are introduced briefly.

The Authenticitys Challenge is a fast-paced entrepreneurship experience where you learn-by-doing while creating a positive change in a social problem. Through a specific challenge, participants are able to participate in this open initiative that tackles social problems through a human-centred, learning-by-doing methodology. The way we learn is changing: Action and experience in real-life situations are a key part of education and competency building. Professional Writing for Public Policy

NGOs usually strive to put forward public policy ideas. Public policy ideas however, can only really succeed when their goals get recognized and understood by the public. Therefore, they need to be explained clearly to the news media. To that end, NGOs should package their ideas into one of the two main products that can be processed by journalists and editors:

  • the press release, which is written like an objective, factual report highlighting the new aspects of the policy idea and putting it into the larger political context;
  • the article (often referred to as Op-Ed), which gives a strong, well-argued opinion about the policy idea and is supposed to be published under your own name - may it be in the New York Times or at huffingtonpost.com.

Of course, offering these two products to the journalists does not guarantee that the media will cover it and that the respective policy idea will be readily embraced by the public. But it gives your NGO a fair chance to make its voice heard. To prepare your NGO for this, the workshop will teach you the basic techniques of these two types of texts. At the same time, it aims to help you sharpening your writing skills overall. Eventually, this course should also strengthen your sense of developing storylines and narratives that resonate with the public.

Communication and Fundraising campaigns workshop

During this two-day training workshop, we will provide insightful knowledge and practical skills on planning and organizing a successful communication campaign for NGOs, social enterprises, and other organizations. We also aim to provide NGOs with basic knowledge of fundraising campaigns. This training will contain a theoretical section regarding strategic planning that will cover: defining the target group, the main messages, discussing the possible communication tools based on the budget.

In the second part of the workshop, we will apply and put into practice the previously discussed methods. The participants will prepare a campaign idea in advance, which we will expand upon and plan together with the group. This session includes social media usage, PR elements, creative content making, campaign management, and evaluation tools. In the fundraising section, we will discuss how participants can brand their organization (e.g. visual identity, opinions about your organization, up-to-date websites) and how to tell their stories, set goals, and measure results. Strategic Planning in Practice' workshop

Strategic Planning is of utmost importance. Without proper strategies in place, NGOs often lack focus and will surely underperform in utilizing their resources. The lack of clear directions and well defined steps, or ‘firefighting,’ will inhibit a NGO to effectively carry out their intent, making their operations reactive as opposed to proactive. For successful fundraising, you need clear answers to strategic questions. Often during the planning stages of fundraising, the NGO should first spend time thinking about a strategy. Donors tend to prefer NGOs with clear and concise intent and strategies. It is also beneficial to attract volunteers and members to your specific fundraising endeavours. However, most NGOs lack a real strategic plan and require assistance in learning how to draft and implement one.

We will show you a very practical and proven method for fundraising strategies and planning stages that includes various examples with time for discussion. Lastly, you will have a very unique opportunity to implement what you have learnt with two volunteers (e.g. company manager, university student), in three-months’ time with four to six consultations.

The workshop offers an overview about the European Union in general: the history, institutions, General Directorates etc. Other topics are the funding-principles of the EU as well as selected EU-strategies (e.g. "Agenda 2020") in relation to National Action Plans and to different topics of the European Union. The participants get in touch with the targets of the EU and the reasons and ways of funding; they get an overview about the 5 European Structural & Investment Funds and other funds. The seminar gives examples of Executive Agencies and National Contact Points as well as information about the European public procurement (e.g. SIMAP, TED) and the principle of "Calls for proposals". This two-day workshop aims to provide civil society organizations with the necessary knowledge and skills to achieve organizational sustainability through cross-sector partnerships and social innovations. For the first day of the workshop, we shall begin by introducing cross-sector partnerships and corporate social responsibility concepts. This will provide the participants with knowledge about forms of business-CSO partnerships.

On the second day, the workshop will then introduce CSOs to other ways of improving their sustainability, including development of income generation activities (social entrepreneurship), and approaches that will improve their fundraising and promotion. This workshop aims to introduce present and future trends of NGO fundraising. The global economic crisis and public budget cuts have had a lasting impact on many NGOs’ financing capabilities and their sustainability. This is especially the case in Croatia and the EU. The continued survival and development of CSOs’ greatly depends on their ability to increase their fundraising capacities. In this workshop, participants will learn to think in strategic, project-oriented and entrepreneurial terms. In addition, they will learn to analyse and choose optimal fundraising models, with an emphasis on combined multiple income streams, proactive project based financing, and innovative social enterprising. Internet Marketing (IM) and Social media marketing (SMM) represent the fastest growing segment of the advertising industry because of the advertising expenditure. The reasons are twofold:

  • According to Mary Meeker, IAB and KPMG research, users spend more time on mobile devices, especially on smartphones, than watching television. The majority of the time on mobile devices is spent to communicate on social network sites.
  • The Internet has become an integral part of the buying cycle of today's customer and according to a recent Pew Research report, 97% of customers in the western states have utilized the Internet to make purchases. Since customers frequently change their habits, it is important for organizations to monetize their presence and activity on the Internet and on social media sites in order to maintain relevance. This workshop is designed to help overcome entry-barriers into the world of IM and SMM. Participants will be shown how to use available tools and techniques that can enhance their marketing presence, while diminishing or doing away with high costs of advertising in order to more effectively reach their potential customer base.

Project Management is becoming an increasingly important competence in non-profit organisations and social enterprises. Temporary funding, project management requirements, on the part of public authorities, trends and developments, concerning volunteer work, requires efficient project management, as well as respective methods for dealing with groups and their integration in project teams. Additionally, project management is becoming crucial when implementing cooperation inside the NPO sector, as well as with public institutions and corporations.

This two-day workshop will attempt to enable participants to properly use project management methods and instruments throughout all phases of the project cycle—from project proposal to project realisation and successful completion. Moreover, the challenges of multi-project management, often faced by NPOs, will be addressed. Developing and Leading Volunteer Teams - Challenges and Chances

Volunteers are a key resource for many NPOs. Depending on the size, structure, and mission of an organization, volunteers are deployed for various tasks and activities. Generally, volunteers collaborate amongst themselves and/or paid staff. The organizational intent of team cooperation is an important component and often a challenge for volunteer management. Successful teamwork increases work satisfaction and commitment for both paid and volunteer staff. In turn, effective teams will create positive effects on the client's system or the provision of services. Conversely, an increased turnover amongst volunteers, due to covert and unprocessed conflicts, will have negative effects on their working climate.

This two day workshop will focus on the characteristics of building, developing, and leading volunteer teams in NPOs. The first section of this workshop will theoretically examine how to successfully formulate volunteer and/or paid staff cooperation. In the second section, we will expand on these theoretical concepts by exploring practical experiences of workshop participants and their organizations. The use of experimental action-oriented methods will encourage participants to develop their interpersonal management skills for both teams and individuals.

Growing for good - How can effective projects spread?

You see there is a solution to a pressing social problem. However, the solution is only implemented locally and reaching only a few people? You believe the solution should be scaled or replicated in order to make more of an impact? Perhaps you have observed others solving similar problems. How can you learn, use, or adapt their ideas and approaches to your situation? You have successfully solved a problem in your community? Other communities have the same problem? How can you transfer your solution to help them? You have developed a new method of teaching, a new intervention to empower marginalized people? You want to find a ways to expand your organization or to transfer the use of your methods to new areas? However, in order to do so, you require further instruction and advice. Intercultural communication and cooperation

Ongoing cultural, social and political developments in Europe and its neighbourhood provide a challenging context for cultural managers and their new initiatives. Today working only in known territories and thinking about solutions merely on national level is not enough for establishing or maintaining a flourishing cultural organisation. Collaborations across borders open new strategic possibilities – among other for financing new ideas - but they require international knowledge and practical skills in transnational and intercultural cooperation. In this workshop we will deal with the special characteristics and proceedings of international collaboration and cross-cultural projects.

Participants will acquire basic know-how for designing, implementing and improving their international cultural collaboration ideas. A key training aspect will be to develop participants’ awareness of intercultural competences they need for carrying out a cultural project with a European partner organisation. Tangible information on European networks and funding strategies will be part of the training too. As in all our workshops participants will have the possibility to work on their own projects and exchange with experienced peers and professionals from the field.

Communication and PR

The two-day workshop will introduce participants to the basics of communication and public relations. You will learn about PR in print, broadcast and online media. You will become familiar with the PESO concept – paid, earned, shared and owned communication. You will have a chance to sharpen your organization’s positioning and learn how to effectively tell your organization’s storyline to different audiences. You will become familiar with the do’s and don’ts of communication, especially in a communication crisis. Moreover, you will learn about the rules for media contacts and about how to conduct good interviews in print and broadcast media. You will also be actively involved during the workshop and have the opportunity to present in front of the group and practice interviews.

Developing a diverse set of income streams for an organization is more than a healthy strategic choice - it can be a meaningful way to engage individuals in your mission and vision. Further, there are numerous example emerging from across Central and Eastern Europe of NGOs successfully raising significant funds from their communities. This program will explore what is working across the region and why, and guide you through a process to develop your own communications-based fundraising strategy. This session will primarily cover mass-fundraising and campaign-based fundraising that targets citizens and corporations. It will touch on some interesting social enterprise models but it will not cover grant writing.

For projects to be successful, they need to be the stepping stones of an entire ecosystem comprised of different people, communities, and other organisations. We are at a time when we are more connected than ever, and there is a need to start working as a system in order for our projects to have the depth of change necessary. The process of "how" we do our projects is as important as the "what" and "why" of the project in order to engage an ecosystem and be able to work together towards a mission and vision aligned result. This workshop will focus in different processes that can be applied in order to enhance collective intelligence and maximize inclusion geared towards a common vision and project management plan.

Journalistic Writing: How you can tell the stories and positions of your organization to the media

NGOs usually strive to put forward public policy ideas. However, public policy ideas can only truly succeed when their goals are recognized and understood by the public. Therefore, these goals need to be explained clearly to the mainstream media. To that end, NGOs should package their ideas into one of the two main formats below, which are frequently utilized and can be understood by journalists and editors alike:

  • the press release, which is written like an objective, factual report highlighting the new aspects of the policy idea and putting it into the larger political context.
  • the article (often referred to as Op-Ed), which provides a strong and well-argued opinion concerning the specific policy idea. It is meant to be published under your own name, be it in the New York Times or the huffingtonpost.com.

Of course, communicating within these two formats to the journalists does not guarantee that your material will gain media coverage and that the respective policy idea will be readily embraced by the public. However, it provides your NGO with a fair chance to make its voice heard. In order to prepare your NGO for effectively communicating with the media, this workshop will teach you the basic techniques of these two types of texts. At the same time, it aims to help sharpen your overall writing skills. Eventually, this course should also strengthen your sense of developing storylines and narratives that resonate with the public.
