ERSTE Foundation is taking an active role in facing those challenges by funding its first research programme on societal transformation processes in Central and Eastern Europe. Migration is one of the main agents of change in the region, influencing the course of local and global development. By bringing the theme into discussion we want to deepen the analysis of the effects of these changes on the life conditions of the people in the area.

There are two basic reasons for the ERSTE Foundation’s interest in the research on societal transformation processes in the Central and Eastern Europe (CEE). The first is that the results will provide a well-founded, practical and realistic basis for the decision-making and planning processes of policy-makers, civil society and business, but also to the Foundation. And the second, equally important reason is that ERSTE Foundation is committed to supporting the scientific work of institutions based in CEE and to promoting research activities in social and political sciences within the region.

The researchers form the social sciences fields will be awarded fellowships, for a period of 12 months, to work on their chosen topics related to the overall programme theme. This year, the research is focused on migration and its effects on demographic and economic development in the CEE. The results of the research will be published, at the end of every 2 years’ cycle on the ERSTE Foundation website. The researchers’ specific recommendations will be promoted in the region by ERSTE Foundation and its project partners, to the relevant organisations interested in politics, civil society and industry.

The Foundation will ensure the exchange of knowledge, experience and ideas through linking the results to other researches in other fields, such as for example, journalism.
