Conference 2009

THE FUTURE OF SOCIAL CHANGE. A Conference on the occasion of the ERSTE Foundation Award for Social Integration 2009.Organised by ERSTE Foundation and the Vienna Institute for International Economic Studies. Bucharest, 24-26 June 2009future

International experts, emergent researchers and practitioners experienced in social development processes debate “1989-2009: Visions and Perspectives after 20 Years of Transition”.

Twenty years ago, the fundamental changes in Central and Eastern European countries generated high hopes and new visions for democracy, economic prosperity and social change. At the heart of these changes was the aim to empower people to actively participate and have a say in the public life of their societies.

What are today’s visions and perspectives which can inspire and sustain societies who have seen rapid economic growth, but recently also the threat of crisis and recession?

This conference will look ahead at social coherence, the building of social capital, the resilience of societies in economic crisis, in short, the upcoming challenges for social development in the next 20 years. International experts, emergent researchers and practitioners experienced in social development processes will be the speakers on topics such as:

  • 20 Years of Freedom: Who is “in” and Who is “out”?
  • 20 Years of Economic Transformation: What Social Consequences for the (Crisis)-Years to Come?
  • Social inclusion: A Place for All in our Societies?
  • Private Initiative – Governmental Provision: What is the Future of Social Service
  • Provisions in CEE?
  • Demographic Challenges: Towards a New Contract between Generations?
  • Education: A Chance for All?
  • Alternative Financial Services: Economic Participation for Everyone?
  • Solutions to the Economic Crisis?
