Culture

We believe in culture as a driving force for a democratic society and in its ability to forge links between diverse linguistic and geographical regions. Culturally speaking, the countries of Central and South Eastern Europe are a highly diverse area which shares a past of enforced political conformity. We offer a platform to reflect on the ambivalence between a newly acquired, regional identity, the centrifugal forces of nationalist fragmentation and common monocultural historical experiences.

culture3-KV Tomislav Gotovac: Showing Elle (1962/2005)

Working with artistic strategies creates an experimental playing field for utopias and for proposals beyond the feasibility of everyday politics as well as for exploring the possibilities of various artistic approaches.

We particularly promote independent projects and those engaged in the cultural sector by providing them with resources and cross-border contacts that are not embedded within state institutions. Most of our projects are transnational, involving research activities that focus on the visual arts from the 1960s to the present day.

Having worked as a curator of contemporary art in Innsbruck and Oslo has not only lead Christiane to working as a curator and project manager at ERSTE Foundation, but also to a membership in the Vienna based queer-feminist DJ collective 'Quote'! For Christiane, having studied at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna and at Lund University in Sweden as well as writing a column for an.schläge - a feminist monthly magazine - has certainly contributed to her multifaceted life!

Born in Fargo (USA), a place made famous by a Coen brothers' film, Heide spent most of her life in Austria. After finishing university programmes in journalism and theatre, film and media studies in Vienna and San Francisco, cornerstones in Heide's career were heading the press department at Tanzquartier Wien and working as production manager at Wiener Festwochen. After that, she worked with the sponsoring department of Erste Bank 'Kontakt. The Arts and Civil Society Programme of Erste Group'. All these vocational challenges have equipped her well for her latest challenge: the Culture Programme of ERSTE Foundation, where she started in 2009.

"It's important to support intellectual and artistic activities as well as empirical research instead of sticking to conventional perspectives and solutions."

Caroline Hornstein-Tomic, Member of the ERSTE Foundation Advisory Board
