Who are the people at ERSTE Foundation?

The team started 2003 with two creative heads developing our strategy. Since then we have been expanding.

Many of us are experienced experts in their respective fields, others dived into the adventure ERSTE Foundation with enthusiasm and full of energy.

To date, we have assembled colleagues from ten different countries and are able to communicate with you in a dozen languages.

    Boris Marte is Head of Erste HUB, the innovation centre of Erste Group. Since 2016 he is again Member of the Managing Board of ERSTE Foundation where he already was part between 2008 and 2012. Before that he was Managing Director of ERSTE Foundation (since 2005) and Director of Corporate Sponsoring of Erste Group Bank (since 2001). Prior to working for Erste Group Bank Boris Marte held various positions in the field of politics as Member of the Cabinets of the Vice-Chancellor and Federal Minister for Science and Research (1991-1995), and of the Cultural Commissioner of the City of Vienna (1997-2001). From 1998 until 2000, Boris Marte was responsible for the installation of the Holocaust Monument in the city of Vienna. In 1999, he published the book “Die Neue Ordnung des Politischen – Die Herausforderungen der Demokratie im 21. Jahrhundert“ (Campus Verlag, Frankfurt/New York).

    His degree in Economics first took Franz to Austria's Federal Ministry of Finance, where he was a supervisor of financial market authority. In 2001, a career change brought Franz to Erste Bank. Starting off in the communications and public affairs department, he soon after became the Head of the Company Secretariat. For the beginning of ERSTE Foundation, he has been the Managing Director of the Legal Affairs Department from 2003 to 2012. Since 2016 he is Member of the Board of ERSTE Foundation.

    Bernhard Spalt

    Chairman of the Board

    Bernhard Spalt is a member of the Board of ERSTE Foundation since 2012 and its chairman since 2016. He has been working for Erste Group since 1991 and has held various management positions in operational and strategic risk management over many years; from 1999 to 2002 he was in charge of bad loan management in the Czech Republic. After his return to Austria, he built up the group’s corporate risk management division and from 2006 to January 2012 was chief risk officer of Erste Group Bank. Since February 2012 he has been responsible for risk management as a member of the board of Erste Bank Hungary.

    Bettina Breiteneder


    Bettina Breiteneder became member of the Supervisory Board of ERSTE Foundation in 2017. Since 1993, she is employed in the family-owned group "BIP Breiteneder lmmobilien Parking" with a main focus on real estate development and management. Until May 2017 she was member of the Supervisory Board of Erste Group. Bettina Breiteneder studied Business Administration at WU Vienna (Vienna University of Economics and Business).

    Maximilian Hardegg


    Maximilian Hardegg graduated with an engineering degree in agricultural sciences from the University of Weihenstephan, Germany. Mr Hardegg spent two years honing his financial expertise at the Vienna AWT Trade and Finance Corporation. He then went back to manage the family estate, which consists of arable land, vineyards, a pig breeding unit and landscape creation as well as a training centre for land users. He is a Board Member of the Deutsche Landwirtschaftsgesellschaft (German Agricultural Association) and the European Landowners’ Organisation and Friends of the Countryside, and has also been President of the latter since 2012. In addition, Mr Hardegg is active in both Austrian and European lobbying groups that support the idea of sustainable development of property, land use and rural development.

    Peter Mitterbauer


    Peter Mitterbauer is Chief Executive Officer and Chief Financial Officer of Miba AG, leading strategic partner of the international engine and automotive industry. In July 2013, he retired from his position as Chief Executive Officer of Miba, which he had held from 1983 until then. Mr Mitterbauer served, amongst others, as President of the Federation of Austrian Industries (1996-2004) and also as Vice President of UNICE (Union of European Industrial and Employers' Confederations) (2001-2004). He chairs the Supervisory Board of ÖIAG (Austrian Republic's Investment & Privatisation Agency) and is also a Supervisory Board Member of Andritz AG, Oberbank AG and Rheinmetall AG.

    Peter Pichler


    Peter Pichler became member of the Supervisory Board of ERSTE Foundation in 2014. Since 1990 he is member of the Board of Berndorf AG, until 2008 as CFO, today as CEO and chairman. Prior to that, from 1983 to 1990, he was manager at Chase Manhattan Bank AG in Austria. Peter Pichler studied social an economic sciences in Graz and Vienna. He is chairman of the Association of Industrialists of Lower Austria and member in the Supervisory Boards of Schöller Bleckmann Oilfield Equipment AG as well as Joh. Pengg AG.

    Deputy Chairwoman

    Johanna Rachinger, Director General of the Austrian National Library since 2001, studied dramatics and German philology at the University of Vienna. After completing her PhD, she started her career as an editor at the publishing house Wiener Frauenverlag and later became head of Readers Services at the Österreichisches Bibliothekswerk (Austrian Library’s Forum). In 1992 she joined the Ueberreuter Publishing House as Head of Publishing and became its Managing Director and General Manager. Mrs Rachinger has received numerous awards, such as the Vienna Woman Award in 2003, Austrian of the Year 2010 in the category "Culture Management", and the University of Economics' Manager of the Year in 2012. Mrs Rachinger is a Senate Member of the Austrian Academy of Sciences and a Supervisory Board Member of ERSTE Foundation.

    Since 2014 Markus Trauttmansdorff is member of the Supervisory Board of ERSTE Foundation. He graduated in 1982 as Dr. jur. and 1985 with a Master of Business Administration. In addition to that he holds a degree in economics. In 1985 Markus Trauttmansdorff started his career at Bain & Company Inc. in Munich as business consultant and in 1988 he became managing partner at IMM Industrie Management München. From 1994 to 2002 he was CFO at TA Triumph-Adler AG. Since 2003 Markus Trauttmansdorff is managing partner of MT Capital GmbH & Co. KG based in Vienna and Munich.

    Manfred Wimmer


    Manfred Wimmer holds a PhD in law and started his career at the University of Innsbruck as assistant lecturer in 1978. Serving the banking sector for more than 15 years his endeavours took him to Erste Bank in 1998 where he continued his career as Head of International Marketing. Currently, Mr. Wimmer serves as Supervisory Board Member for Erste Group as well as for ERSTE Foundation.

    Georg Winckler

    Chairman

    Georg Winckler is an Austrian economist, former Rector of the University of Vienna (1999 – 2011) as well as a professor of economics. He studied at Princeton University (USA) and at the University of Vienna, from where he graduated with a PhD in economics. Prof Winckler is President of the Supervisory Board of ERSTE Foundation and the Austria Mutual Insurance Foundation. He is First Vice Chairman of the Supervisory Board of Erste Group Bank AG and UNIQA Group. His plethora of responsibilities also includes being a Member of the Scientific Advisory Board at Humboldt University Berlin, Member of the Board of Trustees for the Educational Testing Service (ETS) in Princeton, and Member of the University Board at Darmstadt University of Technology.

    Innsbruck - Los Angeles - Dijon - Innsbruck - Vienna - Padua - Vienna. These are some of the places Josefa has lived in. Since 2016, Josefa is working as Controller for ERSTE Foundation. Originally from beautiful Tyrol, Josefa has lived in various places before she returned to Austria. During her studies of International Business Economics at University of Vienna and Risk Management at Danube-University of Krems, she focused on Finance and Public Utility Management. Since then, her professional career first as Executive Assistant and later as Financial Controller has kept her steadily in Austria. She has always enjoyed working in an international team.

    Despite having studied Comparative Literature and Rhetorics at the University of Vienna and UC Berkeley, Jutta is still convinced that books are not just for the studious, but for reading. Since 2007, she has been providing and engendering knowledge as Head of ERSTE Foundation Library.

    Ursula's motto is that happiness is not a state to arrive in, but a manner of travelling. Well, certainly she has done plenty of the latter. While born and raised in Austria, Ursula has lived and worked all over the map - literally! Luxembourg, Grenoble, Paris, Athens have proven to be a valuable detour to finally arrive at ERSTE Foundation in 2005.

    Having worked as a curator of contemporary art in Innsbruck and Oslo has not only lead Christiane to working as a curator and project manager at ERSTE Foundation, but also to a membership in the Vienna based queer-feminist DJ collective 'Quote'! For Christiane, having studied at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna and at Lund University in Sweden as well as writing a column for an.schläge - a feminist monthly magazine - has certainly contributed to her multifaceted life!

    Robin worked for a think tank in Berlin, then in Istanbul, when he decided to make his workplace a desk at ERSTE Foundation in Vienna in 2007. An economic historian by training, he oversees civil society initiatives on journalism, schools and socio-economic research as well as reaching out to other foundations. In 2014 he graduated from Heidelberg University with a Master in Nonprofit Management & Governance, a two-year academic programme for senior Third Sector practitioners, focusing at management and strategy issues. A solid portion of his work is luckily around what he liked best in his youth: fellowships and school-exchange.

    Wanting to support important projects of philanthropic purpose led the former tour guide for visitors of the United Nations Information Service (UNIS) headquarters in Vienna to ERSTE Foundation in 2008. Here, she guides programme information through our database - and is in daily contact with our project partners, ensuring efficient project administration and implementation.

    Together with her team, Maribel communicates ERSTE Foundation and its projects to the world. Joining the organisation in early 2007, Maribel, a Munich-born art historian, journalist, art critic and former press officer of EXPO 2000 in Hanover and documenta X in Kassel, has since established ERSTE Foundation’s Communications Department. She considers her job the most fulfilling that she can imagine: talking all day long about things that you are deeply convinced of. Currently, she is learning Serbian at ERSTE Foundation: "Ja zaista imam najbolji posao na svetu!"

    Barbora has certainly mastered the art of commuting! She lives in Bratislava and works in Vienna. Maybe it is the fact that she studied Psychology at the university that helps always keep her calm even in stressful situations. Since 2013, she has been Project Manager for ERSTE Foundation´s Social Development Programm. Barbora first joined the team of ERSTE Foundation in 2012 as Project Assistant of the Culture Programm. Previously, she had worked at ZONE Media, a film production company based in Vienna.

    Since 2016 Franz Karl Prüller is Senior Advisor of the Board of ERSTE Foundation. Before joining ERSTE Foundation, where he has been director of the Social Development Programme from 2005 until 2013, Member of the Board from 2012 until 2016 and its charman from 2015 to 2016, he had worked at Caritas Austria for 17 years. For a period of nine years, he was Secretary General in charge of international programmes and the project department. During this time he represented Caritas Austria on the executive boards of Caritas International is and Europa and was chairman of the charita­ble foundation Neighbour in Need for three years. Prior to 1996 he was in charge of Cari­tas’ Central and Eastern European programme and disaster relief programme. During his time working on the CEE programme from 1989 to 1993, he helped re-build Caritas organisations in the Czech Republic, Romania and Bulgaria, among others.

    Gerald proves his communication skills every time he takes a group of people safely to the mountains, be it summer or winter. A certified hiking instructor, he knows how to orient himself and enjoys cooperating with others. Before he started supporting the Team of ERSTE Foundation in always finding the best communicative path, Gerald studied Political Science, worked for the publishing house Freytag & Berndt and even wrote a few books on hiking and skitouring in the Alps.

    Susanne has been with the Foundation since the very beginning. She has outstanding organisational skills and a good sense of humour. She is the right hand of the board and always ready to help. Susanne supported UNIDO and various banking institutions before joining ERSTE Foundation in 2005, where she enjoys the vivid spirit and atmosphere.

    Alina loves swimming - mostly in Vienna's multicultural soup. Interested in culture, arts, politics, literature and music, she is currently a PhD student in Sociology, focusing on Action Research and Performative Social Sciences. Besides her career with the Foundation since 2010, Alina also works as theatre trainer with the Theatre of the Oppressed method.

    There ‘ain’t no mountain high enough’ for Nicole, the studied economist. She likes mountains and challenges as well as people and their ideas. This attitude certainly helped her and her team in bringing the Social Impact Award in Austria to life. As a coach, she also supported projects in developing their ideas for SIA or Get Active. Later, Nicole was responsible for launching the ERSTE Foundation NGO Academy in cooperation with the WU Wien. Before joining the ERSTE Foundation in 2012, Nicole volunteered at the Americas Cup and the Euro 2008 and worked for UNICEF in Valencia. Anything else? Yes, what Nikki also likes is a good steak.

    Belgrade, Berlin, Belgrade, Vienna, Venice, Vienna, Belgrade, Vienna. Jovana has certainly moved around a lot! This has, however, only added to her experience and had significant impact on her professional development - skills, which the communications expert has honed even more when joining ERSTE Foundation in 2008. Before joining the team, Jovana worked at the OSCE Mission to Serbia on the country’s democratic reforms. She has a demanding job, handling, among other things, PR activities in Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, Kosovo, Macedonia, Montenegro, Slovenia and Serbia, but always keeps her cool. How cool!

    Lubica was born in Bratislava. She graduated from the Faculty of Management of the Comenius University. Later she worked in various journalistic and PR positions and even translated books. Lubica got to know the ERSTE Foundation during her last job in the press department of Slovenska Sporitelna and got enchanted by its social projects. Since 2009, she has worked in various departments within the Foundation, and is now a member of Budget & Organisation. She also helps us out with all kinds of IT-questions. Lubica likes hiking, travelling, reading and spending time with her family.

    Born in Fargo (USA), a place made famous by a Coen brothers' film, Heide spent most of her life in Austria. After finishing university programmes in journalism and theatre, film and media studies in Vienna and San Francisco, cornerstones in Heide's career were heading the press department at Tanzquartier Wien and working as production manager at Wiener Festwochen. After that, she worked with the sponsoring department of Erste Bank 'Kontakt. The Arts and Civil Society Programme of Erste Group'. All these vocational challenges have equipped her well for her latest challenge: the Culture Programme of ERSTE Foundation, where she started in 2009.

    After having graduated from the Vienna University of Economics and Business Administration, Martin started his banking career in 1989. In 1991, he began working for Erste Bank, heading the New Issues and Funding department from 1993 on. Since 2002, he has been Head of the Group Strategy Department. Martin is responsible for Financial Planning and Capital Markets for ERSTE Foundation.
