On Monday 19 January, Journalist Katya Gorchinskaya will talk to Diplomat Fredrik Löjdquist about the hopes expressed one year ago by the protesters on the Maidan during a joint conversation at the Institute for Human Sciences (IWM) in Vienna.
What has become of joining Europe, restoring democracy, overcoming corruption? What has become of the promises made by the West? After Ukraine’s revolution ended last February with the escape of President Viktor Yanukovych the nation has held two elections, voting in its most pro-European leadership to date. Yet the society is getting increasingly frustrated with the lack of radical reform. The government refers to the war in the east of the country as an excuse. But is this really the reason? And what is the role and responsibility of the international community, especially the EU, in the Ukrainian crisis? Do they provide the means for implementing the reforms the Maidan has called for? What do they do to protect the post-1989 order challenged by Ukraine’s eastern neighbour; what are the chances to restore peace and security in the region, in Europe?
