“Where is Europe? We are in Slovenia. Here people say, ‘We are at the very fringe of Europe. The Balkans starts beyond the Croatian border’, because Croatia belonged to the Hungarian part of the Dual Monarchy. The Croats believe that the Balkans starts in Serbia, at the boundary of Christian Orthodox belief. The Serbs, in turn, see themselves as the last bastion of Christianity against the Islamic confession of Albanians and Bosnians. In Austria they say, ‘We are Europe! Beyond the Karawanken range, in Slovenia, is Slavic territory!’ For the Germans, Austria with its melting pot of peoples is the Balkans. The French see their ‘civilisation’ as the stronghold of European culture, while over there in Germany, Teutonian barbarism rules. And an English journalist told me that basically the whole continent is some sort of a Byzantine-Balcanic empire with Brussels as the new Constantinople; only the British isles are the last defenders of European values.”
Slavoj Žižek, the author of this quote and a travelling professor of philosophy, will speak about the situation that he calls “disastrous, but not serious”. A speech in English language.
