As the election of Donald Trump in the USA proves, populists and populist parties are on the rise, not only in European countries but also globally. These developments raise questions: When are politicians populists? How does their action affect democratic societies? How to deal with populists “in a democratic way”? What distinguishes right-wing from left-wing populism?

Researchers and politicians discuss these questions in the context of the series Debating Europe on

Sunday, 2 April 2017, 11:00 am – 1:00 pm
Burgtheater, Universitätsring 2, 1010 Vienna

Participants in the debate are:
Heinz Bude, Professor of Sociology, University of Kassel
Christian Kern, Federal Chancellor of the Republic of Austria
Roger Köppel, National Council, Swiss People’s Party (SVP); Publisher and editor in chief, Die Weltwoche
Jan-Werner Müller, Professor of Political Science, Princeton University; IWM Visiting Fellow
Karin Priester, political scientist, Westfälische Wilhelms-Universität Münster

Moderator: Alexandra Föderl-Schmid, Editor in Chief, Der Standard

The debate will be held in German, no translation is provided.

Debating Europe is a matinée series of public debates which take place at the  Burgtheater Vienna. It brings leading politicians, scholars and intellectuals together on-stage to discuss the self-understanding of the society in which we live, thus contributing to an emerging European public sphere. The debates have addressed essential European issues, such as solidarity, EU’s foreign policy, Europe twenty years after 1989, and the definition of Europe’s borders. Debating Europe is a cooperation of Burgtheater, ERSTE Foundation, the Institute for Human Sciences (IWM) and Der Standard.
