VIENNAFAIR 2014: Kontakt Art Collection and ERSTE Foundation present photographic work of Margherita Spiluttini
At this year’s VIENNAFAIR, taking place from 2 to 5 October, Kontakt. The Art Collection of Erste Group and ERSTE Foundation is presenting a selection of photographs that Margherita Spiluttini took of Vienna’s South Station (Südbahnhof) in the 1980s, 1990s and 2000s. One of the leading architectural photographers of her time, Spiluttini analyses architectural structures with great attention to detail and captures them using a plate camera.
Spiluttini’s photographs recall a culturally significant building from the latter half of the 20th century, which is embedded in the collective memory of many people. For migrant workers, political refugees and tourists, the south station was also the place where they first came into contact with the West or Vienna. The main railway station is currently being rebuilt and the Erste Campus is due to be completed by the end of 2015 on the site of the former south station according to plans by Henke and Schreieck Architects. Erste Group’s 4,000 staff members are set to start working at the campus in 2016.
With different daily presentations, the exhibition’s display – developed by Johannes Porsch – relates to the fleetingness and multifaceted perspectives of the station and also creates an ideal atmosphere for reading ERSTE Foundation publications. The books and catalogues on show provide a cross-section of the artists’ monographs ERSTE Foundation promotes in collaboration with the Kontakt collection, and publications on contemporary art initiated, published and supported by ERSTE Foundation.
All works originate from Margherita Spiluttini’s archive and are available for purchase.
Book presentation, 4 October, 4 pm
Georg Schöllhammer will present the two books he published in this context – KwieKulik (JRP Rignier, 2013) and Ion Grigorescu. Diaries 1970-1975 (Sternberg Press, 2014). The book presentation will take place in the presence of the artist Zsófia Kulik, the curator Łukasz Ronduda, and the gallerist Andreiana Mihail.
