Yevgenia Belorusets and Yaroslav Hrytsak in dialogue with Martin Pollak

Reading by Sabine Haupt and Philipp Hauß

The series of talks Grenzgänger/Grenzdenker (Cross-border Travellers/Thinkers) deals with the increasing feeling of crisis and insecurity in Europe. The new series is curated by the internationally renowned Austrian historian, literary translator and writer Martin Pollak.

There is no sign that the crisis in Ukraine will be resolved soon. It’s not about a frozen conflict, but about a source of fire which threatens to spread anytime in the neighbouring territories. The consequences are a political and social destabilisation of the country, and a weakening of civil society structures. These should match Putin’s intentions. The West hasn’t found any answer to that so far. There is still a serious lack of knowledge concerning Ukraine. Therefore, it seems even more important to explore the crisis’ root causes and how people react to multiple threats, from outside as well as from inside.

We want to talk about all this with two exceptional Ukrainian intellectuals, the artist and writer Yevgenia Belorusets, and the historian and publicist Yaroslav Hrytsak.
Before the discussion, Sabine Haupt and Philipp Hauß, members of the ensemble, will read texts about concerning Ukraine, moderated by Martin Pollack.
