Social inclusion in Central and Eastern Europe: Myth or reality?

Sarajevo EFC video

Situated at the crossroads of many civilisations, Sarajevo is the perfect place for foundations and their partners to discuss “Rethinking Europe: Solidarity, civil society and political governance”, the theme of the 25th EFC Annual General Assembly (AGA) and Conference. Despite a turbulent history, Sarajevo has emerged to become a beacon of hope for peace and tolerance through multicultural understanding.

If you are planning to attend the conference, we would be happy if you join the panel discussion hosted by ERSTE Foundation:

‘Social inclusion in Central and Eastern Europe: Myth or reality?’
Thursday, 15 May, 15:00 – 16:30, at the University of Sarajevo:

Today, we face a situation of increasing social, ethnic and economic marginalisation of certain population groups – predominantly in Central and Eastern Europe but also in other parts of Europe. This session takes a new look at the factors contributing to increased intolerance, extremism, social exclusion, ethnic hatred, loss of perspective and purpose and aims to find solutions to overcoming obstacles. The session will:

  • Explore advocacy organisations.
  • Explain the actual situation of people on the margins of society, through first-hand experience from representatives from minority and marginalised groups and NGOs.
  • Highlight where the obstacles and challenges are and propose possible working models based on experiences from the panellists.
  • Discuss possible solutions for full inclusion and participation in society and for overcoming social, economic and ethnic marginalisation.

Two inputs by:
Timea Junghaus, executive director, European Roma Cultural Foundation, Budapest
Sergej Kara, NGO founder and director,, Bratislava

Three interventions by:
Milica Djordjevic, director, Center for Youth Integration, Belgrade
Ismar Poric, musician and choirmaster, superar, Srebrenica
