Reporter'11: These are the winners!

Reporter’11: Mara Simperler (23)
Mara Simperler is the winner of the competition Reporter’11, with her idea for a story about “Bhutan — In Search of Gross National Happiness”. This term was shaped by Bhutan’s former king Jigme Singye Wangchuck, who led his country into modern times. In 2011 Mara and Die Presse foreign affairs editor Thomas Seifert will travel to Bhutan to find out whether the Southern Asian kingdom has discovered the key to happy life and whether there is a way to measure happiness.

Reporter’11-Ost: Paul Haller (21) and Teresa Reiter (21)
In this competition, which took place for the first time this year as a cooperation of ERSTE Foundation and Die Presse, two candidates impressed the jury likewise. In the end jury member Knut Neumayer, director of ERSTE Foundation’s European integration programme, decided to send both of them to their destinations. Both will go together with Wieland Schneider from Die Presse. While Paul will travel to Romania to research on “Romanian Beggars’ Bands: Organised Crime or Escape from Poverty?”, Teresa will dedicate her trip to “The Serbian Music Scene, a Mirror of Modern Serbia”.

Mara, Paul and Teresa will report from their travels on a blog at, where you find also more information on the project.
