Do you have a room available? Welcome a refugee!
Do you think that, in Austria, refugees are not treated adequately? Do you want to become active yourself? Would you like to facilitate a refugee’s arriving in Austria? In your apartment or shared flat a room is available?
These are questions asked by the Austrian organisation Flüchtlinge Willkommen (Refugees Welcome) on their website. Flüchtlinge Willkommen connects people who would like to accomodate refugees in their home and asylum seekers who need a place to stay.
The accommodation of refugees in private homes has advantages for both sides. The refugees do not have to stay in shelters with too many people, they get much easier in contact with locals and learn much faster the local language. Hosts get to know another culture and can help a person in a difficult situation. When future hosts register – very often they are students in a shared flat, but also families -, they will be ask a few questions about the housing situation, the number of roommates, their place of residence, the languages that they speak etc. This information helps the team of “Flüchtlinge Willkommen” to find someone suitable.
In 2015 already 200 people found a new home through Flüchtlinge Willkommen. These roommates live in shared flates in Vienna, Lower Austria, Burgenland, Salzburg, Tyrol and Styria. They are coming from Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Eritrea, Ghana, Iraq, Morocco, Mauritius, Nigeria, Pakistan, Russia, Somalia and Syria.
