October Artist in Residence: Pavel Sterec

Pavel Sterec AiR October

Pavel Sterec from Czech Republic is the new Artist in Residence at the quartier 21/MuseumsQuartier in Vienna. He was born in 1985 in Prague, where he still lives and works. He studied in Brno, Prague, and Vienna, and graduated from the Academy of Fine Arts (AVU) in Prague. He studied under Vladimír Skrepl, Jiří Kovanda, Zbigniew Libera and Pawel Althamer.

The statement of the artist for his residency: “In my work, I often use an inductive method of artistic research. I circle the topic, which is usually quite broad and sometimes only vaguely defined, until a certain amount of information, and, more importantly, a certain number of experience and meetings with people have accrued. Then, I classify, reduce and simplify these. The result of my project is often a complex installation; importance is put mainly on the relationships between its heterogenous parts.[…] My work is usually based on cooperation and a series of meetings with various people. At times, I work with scientists; at other times with children or old people, archivists, curators of museum collections, sailors, or prisoners. My collaborators sometimes don’t know that they are a part of a plan. I am interested in social engineering on a small scale, which to me is a different practice than social art. I also feel close to fantastic conceptualism.
During my stay in Vienna I will research symbolic forests, the education of pensioners and life-long learners, and the specific concept of memorial as seen at the Orthodox Jews, i.e. creating a mental memorial by memorizing a certain text.”
