ORF TV Culture Head Martin Traxl one of the winners of the Anna Lindh Journalist Award for the 10-part documentary "Return to Europe"
Presided by André Azoulay, President of the Anna Lindh Foundation, and chaired by renowned Lebanese writer Amin Maalouf, the jury of the Anna Lindh Mediterranean Journalist Award convening in Rome officially announced the winners of the 2009 edition of the prize. The winners of the Award, which is among the leading regional prizes for journalists reporting across cultures and on issues of cultural diversity, will officially receive their Prize at a prestigious ceremony in Monaco on 5 November.
The winners of the 2009 Journalist Awards are:
Ethar El Katatney (written press) for "Identity Crisis" (Egypt Today, Egypt)
Martin Traxl (Television – background) for "Balkan Express" (ORF, Austria)
Chine Labbé (radio production) for "Practicing and creating the law in the Palestinian Territories: a continuous battle" (original title: "Exercer et produire le droit dans les territoires palestiniens: un combat continu" (France Culture, France)
Ennio Remondino (Television – documentary) for "The peoples of the Ark" (original title: "I popoli dell’Arca") (RAI, Italy)
Alberto Arce (conflict reporting) for a series of reportages from Gaza (El Mundo, Spain)
Lisa Goldman (background of conflicts) for "What Israelis wanted to know about the war in Gaza" (Columbia Journalist Review, USA)
The ten-part documentary “Return to Europe” not only gets to the core of the problems in the Balkans, but also shows the dramatic progress made over the past ten years. The films focus on those who fight to stabilise democratic values and shed the heritage of conflict, to create a new Balkans. “Return to Europe” is already a success story: in many countries, from Belgium to Spain, from Greece to Kosovo – single episodes were shown publically and discussed with the audience. The series was also presented at the South East European Film Festival Los Angeles 2009. It was honored with the “Erasmus Euro Media Award 2008” for the most outstanding European media production. The episode “Turkey – Istanbul: Truth, fear and hope” was selected by the Turkish information office for tourism in Austria as the best report on Turkey in 2008.
“Return to Europe” is a co-production of pre tv, 3sat and ORF. Initiated by ERSTE Foundation, the series was produced in cooperation with the European Stability Initiative (ESI) and was additionally funded by the Austrian Television Fund and CineStyria.
