Open call for 2013 Balkan Fellowship for Journalistic Excellence

BFJE fellows 2012

Experienced journalists from Albania, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Croatia, Kosovo, Macedonia, Montenegro, Romania and Serbia are invited to apply for the seventh annual Balkan Fellowship for Journalistic Excellence.

Each year, ten journalists are chosen through open competition to receive funding and professional support to conduct further research into a topic of regional and EU significance – for 2013 the theme is Integrity. We expect the best proposals to put some of the broad ideas evoked by the theme into sharp focus, choosing phenomena that are relevant and current.

Applicants selected by an independent committee to take part in the fellowship will receive a €2,000 bursary and up to another €2,000 for travel and research expenses. They will also attend international career development seminars and receive continuous one-to-one mentoring for their stories.

In addition, the top three articles, again judged by an independent committee, will attract awards of €4,000, €3,000 and €1,000. Completed articles will be published in English and local languages in prominent regional and international media.

The Fellowship was established in 2007 by the Robert Bosch Stiftung and ERSTE Foundation, in cooperation with the Balkan Investigative Reporting Network, to promote journalistic excellence and advance cross-border reporting.

The closing date for applications is 5 March 2013. The application form, guidelines and further information about the fellowship are available online:
