Conference: Memorials and museums in National Socialist concentration camps

9 – 10 September 2010, Vienna

The conference is held at the occasion of the 65th anniversary of the end of the Second World War. Its main goal is to evaluate the current situation of the holocaust memorials in Polish and Austrian National Socialist concentration camps such as Auschwitz, Majdanek, Stutthof and Mauthausen, and to give an overview of their history. As the awareness of war-related events and experiences is fading from generation to generation the future role of holocaust memorials for generations to come will also be a topic at the conference.

The programme of the conference includes lectures on the culture of remembrance, the history of certain monuments, museum education, presentation in the media, monument protection, renovation and conservation.

The conference is held under the patronage of the President of the Republic of Austria, Heinz Fischer.

Venue: Polish Academy of Sciences, Boerhaavegasse 25, room Jan III Sobieski, 1030 Vienna
