AT YOUR SERVICE at mumok cinema
AT YOUR SERVICE – ART AND LABOUR is the title of an exhibition of Technical Museum Vienna and ERSTE Foundation. The connection of art and labour is also the topic of a movie night, taking place in cooperation with mumok.
Tamás St. Auby is a key figure of the Hungarian post-avant-garde. His film Centaur (1973-1975) shows the day-to-day worklife of housewives, farmers, factory workers and their supervisors. While the images are reminiscent of typical propaganda films of the period, the resynchronized dialogues throw a critical, but also humorous and philosophical glance at the working conditions of this time. The film was produced in the state-funded Béla Balázs Studios, but censored before its completion and is only available in the reconstructed version since 2009.
Nightcleaners Part 1 (1972-1975), the most famous film of London’s Berwick Street Film Collective, is a film about the efforts of creating a worker’s union of women who work as cleaners in office complexes in the night. This movie is seen as a milestone of the British political, collective and feminist filmmaking.
Following the two films, there is a conversation between Tamás St. Auby and the curators Silvia Eiblmayr and Christiane Erharter.
